Apparatus through the Decades

The earliest photos of DC Fire Department apparatus are of 19th century horse-drawn steamer engines that pumped water and carried hose, as well as one known horse-drawn ladder truck. These were replaced by the Department’s first piece of motor apparatus, a 500 Gallon Waterous Pumper placed in service as Engine 24 on November 28, 1911. Today, the Department uses state of the art custom built fire engines, ladder trucks, heavy-duty rescue squads, fire boats, a foam unit, a hazardous materials unit, ambulances and other specialized apparatus that can respond to any type of emergency under almost any circumstance.
